RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY

PROCESS & TIMELINE

Data Introductory Call
01

Shortly after receiving access to the data, research teams will participate in a brief conference call to introduce themselves and their research, discuss how to interpret the data, and go over logistics and timelines for the Research Opportunity.

Q&A Call with WCAI and Corporate Partner
02

This call will take place about one and a half months after teams receive access to the data. During this call, research teams will have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with the Data Sponsor about the data and relevant business processes.

Research Continues with WCAI Support
03

Teams will continue to work until the six month point on their projects. At any point, they may reach out to members of WCAI with questions about the data, formatting needs, or requests for additional information.

Midterm Call Update to WCAI and Corporate Partner
04

At the halfway point, research teams, WCAI, and representatives from the Corporate Partner will again meet in a conference call. Teams will briefly present the status of their projects, but there is no expectation that teams have any results -- it is simply a chance to get a sense of how research is progressing. If time permits, research teams can ask a few questions of the Sponsor

Research Continues with WCAI Support
05

Teams will continue to work independently on their projects. At any point, they may reach out to members of WCAI with questions about the data, formatting needs, or requests for additional information.

Ten-Month Call with WCAI
06

In this brief conference call, the research teams will be joined by WCAI co-directors Peter Fader and Eric Bradlow to discuss some best practices for presenting to the Data Sponsor. Teams may choose to ask any questions regarding closing symposium presentations, or share their experiences from past WCAI symposia.

Closing Symposium in Philadelphia or San Francisco
07

At this event, research teams, WCAI, and representatives from the Data Sponsor will come together at Wharton’s Philadelphia or San Francisco campus to share the findings that have resulted from this dataset. Each team will share their findings directly with the Sponsor and have the opportunity to discuss further with WCAI and the Sponsor during a cocktail hour following the symposium.

Frequently

Asked Questions

What are my obligations if I am awarded the data?

First and foremost, we want you to do great research! There are a few points during the Research Opportunity where teams will participate in a conference call, but the goal of these meetings is to give you a greater understanding of the data, as well as to spark new ideas and support your research.

The Research Opportunity culminates after one year in a closing symposium at Wharton’s Philadelphia or San Francisco campus, and we ask that at least one member of each team attend and present the team’s findings at this event.

You can read more about the Research Opportunity timeline  on the For Researchers page.

I’m interested in a dataset from one of the past Research Opportunities. Can I get access?

One year after the data is awarded, researchers are welcome to submit a proposal to any of the archived data sets listed hereHowever, to be fair to the originally accepted research teams, we cannot accept new proposals while the Research Opportunity is ongoing.

Do I have to be part of the University of Pennsylvania to submit a proposal?

Teams do not need to be affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania to participate in a Research Opportunity. Researchers from all institutions worldwide are encouraged to submit a proposal!
